History

Atlanta’s historic Glenn Hotel has unveiled a new look with a bolstered charisma that channels the complex contrasts of the New South. Undergoing a complete redesign this summer, the 1923 building’s latest iteration welcomes guests into an urban setting that pays homage to Southern tradition with a modern twist. The eclectic, residential-style interior brings to life a world that is quintessential Atlanta. More than a hotel, this is a gathering place for travelers and locals alike who are all embraced with a gracious gentility, a generosity of spirit and a well-mannered sense of style.

The Glenn building at 110 Marietta Street was named after John Thomas Glenn, a prominent attorney and the 31st mayor of Atlanta. The ten-story structure we know today was commissioned by the George Fuller Company and part of a wave of new office development that coincided with the opening of the Spring Street viaduct. Designed by Washington, D. C. architect, Waddy B. Wood, the “neoclassical revival style” structure’s imposing facade features limestone, terra cotta detailing and a heavy cornice lined with lion heads.

In 2006, Legacy Property Group transformed the Glenn building into the first boutique hotel in downtown Atlanta. The property was subsequently placed on the National Register of Historic Places, where it remains today. As Legacy Property Group prepared for another revamp of the storied building in 2020 it once again aimed to preserve the history that makes The Glenn Hotel unique.

The Glenn Hotel’s complete revamp extends to the rooftop SkyLounge, an area that is renowned for its panoramic view of the Atlanta skyline. Step off the elevator on the top floor to walk through a tunneled portal of greenery into a “garden in the sky.” Basket lights hang at varying heights below a wood slat ceiling and white-washed brick surrounds the seating areas, which are furnished in rocking chairs, high-tops as well as more lounge-style furnishings. The bar features metal mesh and green subway tile, while the restroom is done in penny tile and a wall covering depicting birds flying through the sky.
